Reading groups will meet for discussion

LEETONIA

The Leetonia Community Public Library’s nonfiction group will meet at 6 p.m. May 28 at the library, 181 Walnut St., to discuss “The Invention of Air” by Steven Johnson.

The book is a true tale of Joseph Priestley, scientist, inventor, minister and the 18th-century thinker whose discovery of the components of air revolutionized his times and the scientific method.

The fiction group will be discussing “June Bug” by Chris Fabry at 10 a.m. June 5. Finding her own photo among the missing children in her neighborhood Walmart store, June Bug is set on a quest of self-discovery.

There is a new group forming to discuss classic works at 7 p.m. June 1. Its first discussion will be about the “Tao [Dao] Te Ching,” attributed to Lao-Tzu. Its poetry contains simple yet profound thoughts.

Book group to meet at Salem library

Salem Public Library’s selection for the May 28 Adult Book Discussion Group is “The Elegance of the Hedgehog” by Muriel Barbery.

In this international best- seller, two girls live inconspicuous lives in the center of an elegant Paris apartment building. It is only when a stranger moves into their building — and sees through the girls’ disguises — that Paloma and Rene discover their kindred spirits.

Salem Public Library offers the book discussions from 7 to 8 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Books are chosen from a wide range of literary styles and genres. Copies of each selection are available from the library.

Writers will meet Monday at Peaberry’s

CANFIELD

Area writers are invited to attend Monday Night Writers from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Peaberry’s Cafe, 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie, the two-hour session will include both writing exercises and discussions on the creative and business aspects of writing. Those with works in progress are welcome to take copies of their projects for comments and critiques from the group.

Jason Collins denies he is seeking book deal

NEW YORK

Jason Collins, an NBA veteran who recently announced he was gay, is disputing reports from publishing insiders who say he is shopping a book deal.

Officials at three publishing houses told The Associated Press that they had been contacted about a planned memoir by Collins, the first active player in any of the four major U.S. professional sports leagues to come out as gay. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the proceedings.

Collins tweeted that it wasn’t so: “I have no current plans to write any books. Sorry to disappoint my literary-loving fans,” he said, adding a hashtag “GoingToTheGym.”

Collins’ agent, Arn Tellem, also disputed the claim in a statement.

“As you can imagine, we’ve been inundated with all kinds of requests and various opportunities, but as of now have not had any discussions on behalf of Jason regarding a potential book deal because Jason has yet to decide if he wants to write a book,” Tellem said.
