YOUNGSTOWN

A Youngstown man was killed, and his 76-year-old mother was wounded after shots were fired early today in the Brownlee Woods neighborhood of the South Side.

Robert Joseph Vanderpool, 37, was found dead, slumped over the front porch of his family’s house at 3337 Loveland Road, about 12:40 a.m., according to the Youngstown Police Department.

Vanderpool appeared to have gunshot wounds to his shoulder.

Rosemary Vanderpool, 76, told police she had been shot in the leg after she heard her son yell and opened the door. A gunshot came through the door, striking her in her thigh, Vanderpool told police.

No suspects have been identified in the case, and no arrests have been made.

Vanderpool’s killing is Youngstown’s fifth homicide of 2013. At this time in 2012, the city had recorded 10 homicides.
