YOUNGSTOWN

Suffragan Bishop C. Shawn Tyson, pastor at the Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church, will announce the church’s plans for the long-closed Idora Park at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley, 2246 Glenwood Ave.

He will be joined by the Idora Neighborhood Association, a group of residents in that South Side neighborhood, that has asked the church for about four years what is it going to do with the 26-acre parcel that Mount Calvary purchased in 1985 for $300,000.

The church had proposed at the time to build a $50 million City of God with a nursing home, counseling center, shopping plaza, retirement home along with religious education and worship facilities. It was never built.

The amusement park, which opened in 1899, closed in 1984.

Those needing a ride to the event can call the Idora Neighborhood Association at 330-318-5165 or by email at idoraneighborhoodassoc@gmail.com.
