Funeral set for today for W. Pa. officer killed in crash

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) — The funeral is set for a western Pennsylvania police officer who died when a car being pursued by police in a neighboring city crashed into his cruiser.

Sixty-year-old Shenango Township Officer William J. “Jerry” McCarthy IV was killed last Thursday in New Castle.

His funeral is set for 11 a.m. today at St. Vitus Church in New Castle, after which a procession of police and emergency vehicles drive to a cemetery in Grove City.

Twenty-five-year-old Kylee Barletto, of New Castle, has been charged with manslaughter of a law enforcement officer and 15 other crimes. New Castle police say she sped away when an officer tried to pull her over for driving erratically and not having a license.

Her attorney, James Ecker, says he’s still gathering facts in the case.
