Hands-only CPR

HERMITAGE, PA.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Bureau of EMS have established the goal of training 250,000 Pennsylvania residents in hands-only CPR.

To aid in this effort, the Community Health Partnership of Mercer County, along with Elite EMS, EMMCO West, Grove City Medical Center, Life Force Ambulance Service, McGonigle Ambulance Service, the Mercer County Pre-hospital Care Council, Sharon Regional Health System, the Shenango Valley Mall, Superior Ambulance Service, and UPMC Horizon are sponsoring “Save a Life Saturday — Mercer County” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 at the Shenango Valley Mall, 3303 E. State St., Hermitage.

Certified CPR instructors will teach the hands-only CPR for free.

Participants will not receive certification but will learn how to perform hands-only CPR for use in an emergency medical situation.

The event is open to anyone, including children, teenagers and adults.

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership (MYCAP) is celebrating May, National Community Action Awareness Month, with public Community Action Awareness Day activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 17 at Wick Park Recreation Center, 260 Park Ave.

There will be food, refreshments, games, prizes, face painting and other activities.

Parking is available on the street outside of Wick Park or people may park at MYCAP’s office at 1325 Fifth Ave. Free rides from MYCAP’s office to the Wick Park Recreation Center will be provided by MYCAP’s Transportation Bus.

Brain-tumor clinic

AKRON

With the on-boarding of pediatric neuro-oncologist Dr. Sarah Zieber Rush, Akron Children’s Hospital now offers a comprehensive Brain Tumor Clinic for children and teens.

Dr. Rush has joined Akron Children’s Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders and will be heading up the brain tumor clinic in close consultation with the hospital’s divisions of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Neurology and Neuropsychology.

Her primary clinical interest is tumors of the brain, brainstem and spine.

Support from grants

FARRELL/GREENVILLE, PA.

The UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation recently received three grants from local foundations in support of its Medical Equipment Recycling Program (MERP).

The grants are: $3,500 from the PNC Foundation to support increased program costs; $10,000 from the Community Foundation of Western Pennsylvania and Northeast Ohio to support expansion into Greenville; and $5,000 from the Almira Foundation to support the costs of program expansion into Lawrence County.

Seeking participants

AKRON

The Autism Society of Greater Akron is seeking sponsors, runners, walkers and vendors to participate in its 5K run and walk June 15 at Lock 3 in downtown Akron.

The Akron Autism 5K and Walk, formerly Akron Walks for Autism, is the Autism Society of Greater Akron’s premier fund-raising and autism awareness event. Money raised stays local to support individuals with autism, their families, and the professionals who support them.

The event will be June 15, at Lock 3 in downtown Akron.
