CANFIELD

Mahoning County Career and Technical Center horticulture program’s spring plant sale starts Monday. Horticulture students have prepared items including assorted annuals, hanging baskets and fresh tomatoes and peppers. Flats of flowers also will be available.

The Horticulture Green House will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday through May until all items are sold.

Spring cleanup

Weathersfield Township’s 2013 Spring Clean-Up program will be this week. Residents should place items out on their regular garbage night for pickup.

Excluded items are: tires, car parts and batteries, untied brush (bundles must be cut and tied at no more than 4 feet long and 2 feet in diameter in order to be picked up), hot ash or embers, renovation materials such as sod, rock, bricks and dirt, steel drums any size, explosives, propane and gas cylinders, all liquids (paint is fine, but must be solid, so either dry completely or mix with sand or kitty litter, and lids must be removed), hazardous waste, including poisons, fuel, oil, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, medical waste, including all hypodermic needles and loose unbagged animal feces.

Appliances will be taken, but if they contain Freon, they must be tagged by a certified technician showing that the coolant has been removed. This includes air conditioners, freezers and refrigerators.

Firefighting grants

Greenville, Pa.

State Sen. Robert Robbins, R-50th, is encouraging volunteer fire companies serving rural areas and communities with fewer than 10,000 residents and where forest and brush fires are common to apply for grants of up to $7,500 for training and equipment purchases directly related to fighting brush and forest fires.

Funds from the Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant Program, administered by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, may be used for purchasing mobile or portable radios, installing dry hydrants, performing wildfire prevention and mitigation work, training wildfire fighters, or converting and maintaining federal excess vehicles to be used for fire suppression. DCNR is giving priority to requests for projects that include the purchase of wildfire suppression equipment and protective clothing.

Grant applications must be electronically submitted through DCNR’s eGrant Web page by 4 p.m. May 23. Applicants should visit www.dcnr.state.pa.us and click on “Apply for Grants.”
