Magistrate approves protection order for Warren councilman, wife

A magistate in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court has issued an emergency temporary civil protection order against a man who Warren City Council President Bob Dean says has been harassing him and his wife.

Dean filed for the order April 26, saying Derrick Eggleston of Fourth Street Southwest in Warren confronted his wife, Nedra, at a Bible study at a church on Palmyra Road Southwest, followed her car home and made threatening phone calls to the councilman.

Dean is on the ballot Tuesday in a re-election bid.

The protection order is good for three months or until after a 10 a.m. May 15 hearing at the Trumbull County Courthouse when Dean and Eggleston will both have the opportunity to present evidence.

The temporary protection order was issued without any input from Eggleston, said Patrick McCarthy, a county magistrate.

The order requires Eggleston to stay at least 500 feet away from Bob and Nedra Dean.

Dean, who lives on Sunnybrook Drive Southeast, filed a police report April 17, saying he had received a threatening letter from an unidentified person, and his wife had been menaced by a known person. The report doesn’t describe either incident in detail.

Dean filed another police report April 29, saying an unknown person entered Dean’s attached garage and entered two vehicles inside but didn’t steal anything.

The car doors were open and dome lights were on when Dean went into the garage at 5:35 a.m., Dean said.

Dean has been criticized for the fund raising campaign he created to help the families of six teens who died in a March 10 car crash with funeral expenses.

After the funerals were over and funds had been distributed for caskets and other burial expenses, there was $10,860 left.

Members of a committee of pastors responsible for handling the account decided to keep the remaining money in the account for any future tragedies that would require funds.

But some people have been angry with Dean, saying the remaining funds should have been distributed to the families, the council president said.

On Monday, Dean and Thomas S. Conley, president and CEO of the Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League, announced that the $10,860 was being donated to the Urban League.
