Couch to 5K program under way

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center will present its second annual Couch to 5K program, beginning May 9.

There will be a free informational seminar on the program, given by Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D., on May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at his Boardman office located in South Bridge West (behind Second Sole) at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3.

The Couch to 5K program will consist of three training sessions per week for 12 weeks in Boardman. Last year, participants were from a wide range of ages, including some in their 50s and 60s. The fee for the program is $90 for the 12-week program or $40 per month.

The instructor will be Amber Landsman, a strength and conditioning fitness trainer with 20 years experience training and running races. She has a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology. Dr. Suzelis, also an avid runner, will assist with some of the sessions.

Library closed for holidays

All public libraries in Mahoning County will be closed on May 12 (Mother’s Day) and May 26-27 (Memorial Day weekend).

Give blood at the library

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive at the Poland library on May 15 from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Connect with your eReader

Bring your eReader to the Poland library today at 10 a.m. and Monday from from 6 to 7 p.m. The librarians will show you how to download eBooks from the library’s digital catalog on the website. For adults. Space is limited. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the branch by name to register.

Build your own business website

Join Tyler Clark, columnist for the Business Journal and technology consultant, who will present a “how-to” workshop on creating a website for your business. The workshop will be May 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the Poland library. For adults.

Lego my library May 14

Children, age 6 and up, can create Lego designs at the Canfield library on May 14 from 6-7 p.m. Legos will be provided.

Babies and books set at library

Babies ages 6 to 23 months can join the Poland library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader every Wednesday in May at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales for toddlers set for Thursday

Join the Poland library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Thursday in May at 10 and 11 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Library hosts Fun for 4s and 5s

Join the Poland library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader every Tuesday in May at 1 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Dining with Diabetes classes set

A three-week Dining with Diabetes series of classes will be held May 15, 22 and 29 at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown. The classes will be 12:30 to 3 p.m. and are open to diabetics, their family members and caretakers. Cost of the series is $30 and pre-registration is required by May 8.

Those enrolled will be taught how to prepare meals that are healthy, easy to make and delicious. They also will learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, exercise and how to understand diabetes-related medical tests. Recipe books and diabetes brochures will be provided. Sponsored by the Ohio State University Extension, Mahoning County. Registration for the classes can be made by calling the extension office at 330-533-5538.

Local author book signing

Bradley’s Book Outlet will be hosting local author Jason Webb May 19 from 1-4 p.m. for a book signing of Webb’s latest children’s book, “Tim Chance Has Big Dreams.” The event will offer free face painting, balloons and drinks with your purchase of “Time Chance Had Big Dreams.”

AWBA Mother’s Day celebration set

The Tri-Gold Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will hold a Celebration of Mothers Day on May 8 at the Poland Library lower level meeting room. Social will begin at 5 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Kravitz Delicatessen inside Poland Library cater. The cost is $13. For reservations call 330-793-6208 or 330-757-1251. Members are asked to bring photo’s and information about their mothers to share, also a scarf for a demonstration on scarf tying.

Kids decorate cake for mom

Dairy Queen invites kids to decorate a cake for mom on May 11. The Cornersburg Dairy Queen will host the event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Austintown Dairy Queen will host the event from 2 to 5 p.m. Qualified DQ cake decorators will be on hand to assist. Place an edible image of your choice on your DQ cake for a special touch. Children must be supervised by an adult.

Costs range from $19.99 for an eight-inch round cake to $26.99 for a 10x14 sheet.

Hear best-selling author

Hear No. 1 International best-selling author Dan Brown at the live-streaming event at Austintown library on May 15 at 7:30 p.m. Brown’s publisher, Doubleday, is providing a live stream to bookstores and libraries across the country and the Austintown library will be your local connection. Listen to Brown speak, via live-stream video, about science, religion, book publishing, filmmaking and a few surprise topics. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

ABWA meeting set

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will be holding the election of new officers at their May 14 meeting. The meeting will take place at The Pavillion at the Saxon Club on Meridian Road at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will be a buffet of stuffed chicken breast and stuffed cabbage rolls, red skin parsely potatoes, Prince Edward blend of vegetables, salad, rolls with butter and coffee and tea and dessert for $19. Ursuline Sisters accepting applications

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown are accepting applications for their June 2013 intern/volunteer program. College students or recent graduates 18 and older with a few hours a week to spare and a sincere desire to make a difference in the community are encouraged to apply.

Interns and volunteers really make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate while gaining valuable workplace experience to build their r sum s, having fun, meeting new people and visiting diverse places. Hours are flexible, and participants can extend their experiences beyond June.

Spring bird and wildflower hike set

The Friends of the Poland Forest Spring Bird and Wildflower hike will take place tomorrow at 9 a.m. Meet at the College Street entrance to the Poland Municipal Forest. The hike will last approximately one hour and will be at a slow to moderate pace. All are welcome.
