Boys track defeats Lake


The Boardman boys track team improved its Federal League record to 3-1 with a 91-46 victory over the Uniontown Lake Blue Streaks on April 25.

The Spartans opened the meet with a victory by junior Alan Burns, senior Sam Sheronovich, junior Justin Maroni and freshman Nathan Hadley with a time of 8:35 in the 4x800-meter relay. In the next event, the 110-meter hurdles, the Spartans took first and second places with senior Will Birchfield at 15.3 and junior Jeff Bean at 15.8. In the 100-meter dash, the Spartans took all three scoring spots led by senior Nathan Jones in first at 11.3, junior Isaiah Lyle second at 11.5 and junior Turel Thompson third at 11.6.

“We certainly came out strong from the get go,” said Boardman head coach John Phillips. “We were up 22-1 after only three events — that does not happen very often.”

In the 1600-meter run, Hadley took first with a time of 4:37 followed by Burns at 4:40. The Spartans won the 4x100-meter relay with the team of Thompson, Lyle, junior Brian Bodrick and Jones in a time of 44.5. Junior Nick Cordova placed first in the 400-meter run with a time of 54.7, he was followed by freshman Brendon Lucas at 54.9 and in third was sophomore Josh Suarez at 56.0.

In the 300 hurdles, Birchfield was first at 41.1 and Bean second at 41.5. The 200-meter dash was won by Jones in 23.2 seconds with Bodrick in second in 23.9. The next event was the 3200-meter run which saw Burns take second at 9:57. The Spartans capped the meet by winning the 4x400 with the team of Suarez, Lucas, senior Anthony Calautti and Cordova.

In the field events, Thompson took first in the long jump at 18-6.75. In the high jump, Bean was second at 5-4. In the discus, senior Chris Riwniak was first with a throw of 134-1 and junior Mike Sferra was third at 124-11. Riwniak took first in the shot put at 48-2. Finally, in the pole vault, sophomore Dan Liptak was second with a vault of 10 feet.

Riwniak earned the BW3 ‘Track MVP’ for the meet.
