National Day of Prayer is Thursday

National Day of Prayer will be observed Thursday.

The church community of Girard will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church, 78 E. Liberty St., Girard, and leave for a 9 a.m. walk with a processional cross. Residents may participate.

The group will visit key sites, including the fire and police stations, city hall, municipal court, St. Rose School, Emmanuel Community Care Center, Girard Free Library and churches, Trinity Lutheran, First United Methodist, First Baptist, St. Rose Catholic, First Christian and others.

An observance also is planned at noon at Salem Area Chamber of Commerce building on the green. Clergy and lay people will offer scripture and prayers for government, military, media, business, education, church and family.

Cleanup planned

The Austin-Starlite Neighborhood Association is having a “Clean Drains Before the Rains” event on streets that easily flood because of clogged, trash filled drains and drainage ways.

Participants are to meet at Williamsburg Street and Bennett Avenue at 10 a.m. Saturday. The cleanup will last until 1 p.m.

Boil advisory given in Brookfield Twp.

Brookfield

Due to a water-main break, a precautionary boil-water advisory has been issued for areas of Brookfield Township until further notice.

During this advisory, customers are urged to boil all tap water used for drinking and cooking for three to five minutes.

The streets affected include Warren-Sharon Road between Golf Drive and Yankee Run Road, and Brookfield and Lincoln avenues.

211 training class to be offered

MERCER, PA.

The United Way of Mercer County and Grove City Area United Way have teamed up to provide 211 training to other areas. Of the 400,000 calls that Mercer County 911 received last year, only 200,000 were genuine emergencies, meaning the other callers needing assistance with nonemergency matters could have received help through the new 211 service in Mercer County.

The training is May 10 in the Mercer County Career Center, 776 Greenville Road. Mercer County service providers and nonprofit agencies are urged to attend the training.

To reserve training spots, attendees should specify 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 to 3 p.m. classes and fax their names and organizations to 724-981-4838 on or before Thursday.
