Rondinelli will face R&J for ‘B’ championship


Youngstown Metros split a pair against Chillicothe.

STRUTHERS — Monday’s five-run third inning sent Rondinelli Tuxedo to the Class B championship series at Cene Park.

In the deciding game of their best-of-5 series, Rondinelli defeated Dave Sugar Excavating, 9-3.

In the third inning, Cory McGinnis, Chuck Olesky and Tony Brunetti hit consecutive run-scoring triples.

McGinnis, Cory Nesbitt and Marc Kanetsky all had two hits while Robert Switka tossed a complete game with three strikeouts, allowing only one earned run.

Dane Dobson, and Jeff Musick had two hits each for Dave Sugar.

Rondinelli will face R&J Trucking in the best-of-five championship series. Games One and Two will be played tonight starting at 6 on Cene 1.

R&J advances

R&J Trucking advanced to the championship series by sweeping two games from Simon Roofing, 13-2 and 7-2.

In the first game, John Madeline had three of R&J’s 14 hits while Ed Rohan, Matt Pitzullo and Joey Wielbruda had two apiece.

Scooter Hargate and Dan Kubala doubled while Lou Coppola, Jared Barker and Adam Sepesy combined on the pitching win.

In the second game, Madeline homered and Joe Iacobucci doubled for R&J.

Pitzullo and Xavier Godoy had two hits each while Scott Smith pitched 42⁄3 innings for the win.

Mark Novotny and Rich LaRubbio doubled for Simon.

Dave Sugar 1, Rondinelli 0

Jake Thomas outdueled Tyler Gilmore, allowing just two hits.

Mike Hoelzel scored the game’s only run, leading off the second inning with single. He advanced to second on Mike Frasso’s hit, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathon Brady. Jeff Musick hit a double for Sugar.

McGinnis had a double and Nesbitt a single for Rondinelli.

Tri-State College

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Metros split a doubleheader against Chillicothe on Sunday at Pemberton Park in Tri-State College League play.

In the Metros’ 4-2 victory, Rich O’Brien tossed a five-hitter and Tom Clayton doubled twice. John Warren tripled while Tony Pozega doubled.

In Chillicothe’s 8-3 victory, Cameron Cimino doubled for Metros while Chris Trainer and Billy Schneider doubled for the winners.

Mantle Tournament

Rondinelli Tuxedo scored 18 times on 16 hits as they eliminated Diamond Sports from the Mickey Mantle tournament at Cene Park, 18-7, in five innings.

Jason Bagoly had four hits and drove home three runs while Brad Byers had three hits for the winners. Cory Hill allowed three earned runs in picking up the win.

Diamond Boys 12, Astro Falcons 10

Diamond Boys used a five-run fourth inning to hand Astro Falcons their first loss of the tournament.

The Diamond Boys advance to the championship game against the winner of the Astro Falcons⁄Rondinelli game that was played late Monday night.

Joe Pawlowski had three hits while Justin Szydlowki drove home four runs.

Ryan Rovnak, Shane Waghner and Todd Kibby had two hits each for the Falcons.

Astro Falcons 17, R&J Trucking 2

Shane Wagner and Jared Kirin had three hits apiece to lead Astro Falcons. Phillip Woods had two hits and six RBIs for Astro while Kibby also had two hits. Ricky Segesto and Sam Porter had two hits each for R&J.

Ohio Hawks 10, Livi Steel 2

Bill Yartz had two hits for Livi Steel, which was eliminated from the tournament.

Diamond Boys 7, R&J Trucking 5

Pat O’Brien, Tim Schiraldi and Nick Crum had two hits each for R&J, which was eliminated with this loss. One of O’Brien’s hits was a double.

Astro Falcons 19, Rondinelli 15

Tom Cheslik and Shane Wagner hit home runs as Astro outslugged Rondinelli. Wagner and Kibby had two three apiece, with one of Kibby’s a triple.

Trent Vellinger, Kared Kirin and Mike Natal all had two hits. Cheslik and Notal also tripled while Kirin hit a double.

Drew Fitzpatrick had a homer and triple for Rondinelli while Nick Dinello tripled and doubled.

Brad Byers, Kevin McCulloh and Mike Pisto also hit triples while Cory Hill and Jaime Shepard had doubles. Hill and McCulloh finished with two hits apiece.

Class AA

YOUNGSTOWN — McMurphy-Penn Ohio scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Skiffey Neopolitan Dental, 12-1, at Pemberton Park Sunday.

Willie Sly had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs for M-PO. John Schiraldi, Lou Kopachy and Dave Julio all doubled.

Schiraldi and Tom Anderson finished with two hits and two RBIs each. Adam Wylji also singled twice.

Tom Enyeart allowed one hit over five innings, fanning three.

Dom Chiarella’s single was Skiffey’s only hit.

Mahoning Valley Knights 3

YOUNGSTOWN — Erin Satterlee had three hits and scored twice to lead Tamburros. Ray Jaminet and Josh Savage added doubles.

Torrie Frangiamore had two hits, including a double, for the Knights.

Tri-County 5, Reds 3

WARREN — Tim Kearney had three hits and picked up the save to lead T-C. Kearney struck out five in 21⁄3 innings. Josh Susany earned the win with 21⁄3 innings of relief. Adam Boris, Matt Kearney, Mike Diaz and Tim Grantz all had two hits for T-C. Grantz and Brandon Schoff hit doubles. Nate Daugherty singled twice to lead Reds.

WARREN — Jeff Speck went 4-for-5 with a double to lead Champion. Ryan Romack and Mike Sweeney had three hits, and Tom Popadak and Eric Lance had two. Lance and Jason Johnson hit doubles.

Anthony Maruca had a double and single for CIP, while Nick Zajaczkowski, Jeremy Albani and Josh Miller hit doubles.
