Gateway selectsWR Peterson
YOUNGSTOWN -- For the first time since joining the Gateway Football Conference in 1997, a Youngstown State wide receiver has been named the league's Offensive Player of the Week.
Senior wide receiver T.J. Peterson received the conference's honor on Sunday, the Gateway announced.
Peterson had a tremendous performance in the Penguins' 34-14 victory over Maine on Saturday. He established career highs in receptions with five, yards with 110 and touchdowns with two. Entering the game, Peterson had two career touchdown receptions before hauling scoring throws of 42 and 16 yards versus the Black Bears.
His previous career highs were four receptions against Missouri State in 2005 and 66 yards against Liberty, which he also set last year.
Peterson caught a pass in all 11 games last season and carries a streak of 13 games into Saturday's contest at 25th-ranked Penn State on Saturday. The game is slated for 3:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.
Illinois State linebacker Kye Stewart was named the league's defensive Player of the Week while Redbirds placekicker Kevin Mazur was tabbed the Special Teams Performer of the Week.
Soccer teamblanked by KSU
KENT -- The Youngstown State women's soccer team (1-5) could not connect with the net in the 1-0 loss to Kent State (2-3-1) at the KSU soccer field .
Kent State dominated YSU in shots 17-2 in the first half.
YSU goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney stopped all the Flashes shots on goal, making five saves in the first period
Despite the Flashes' aggressive offensive tactics, the game remained scoreless until the second half. The goal came from KSU midfielder Cassie Seten off the pass from Lisa Kurz at 52:35 putting Kent State up 1-0.
The Penguins contended with the Flashes in the second half as both teams had seven shots on goal. The Penguins outnumbered Kent in corner kicks 5-2.
Jordan Gapczynski had two shots on goal. Sophomores Keeley Rice and Alex Lee each took a shot on goal for the Penguins as well.
Bodzioney finished the game with seven saves while KSU goalkeeper Alicia Fernandez totaled four saves.
The Penguins will play Friday in the Citadel Adidas Soccer Classic in Charleston, S.C. as they take on Francis Marion at 1 p.m.

South Range graduateinterns with Shock
NORTH LIMA -- Shely Berry, a 2005 graduate of South Range High School, spent the summer interning with the Detroit Shock, the WNBA champions.
Berry is a sophomore Ohio State University, majoring in sports management. Last year, she was on the Ohio State rowing team that won the Big Ten Title and she will be student manager of that team this year. Her parents are Rick and MaryJo Berry.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Mooney High football players and one from Ursuline were selected as Steel Valley Conference players of the week.
Mooney defensive back Dom Scarnecchia blocked a field goal, made an interception, forced a fumble, broke up four passes and made six tackles in Friday's 40-13 victory over Akron Hoban.
In the same game, Mooney quarterback Dan McCarthy completed 50 percent of his passes, passed for 125 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 55 yards and made four tackles on defense.
In Ursuline's 20-14 victory over Fitch, tailback Matt Yarab rushed for 157 yards on 23 carries, scored a touchdown, threw one pass for a 47-yard gain and made five tackles on defense.

LPGA founderPatty Berg dies
Patty Berg, the golf pioneer who won an LPGA Tour-record 15 major titles and was one of the 13 founding members of the tour in 1950, died Sunday. She was 88.
She died at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, Fla., of complications from Alzheimer's disease, the LPGA Tour said.
Houston Dynamodefeats Galaxy
CARSON, Calif. -- Dwayne De Rosario scored early in the second half and the Houston Dynamo rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Houston (10-8-9) broke a four-game winless streak. The Galaxy (9-13-5), the MLS defending champions, remained three points out of a playoff spot with five games left.
