NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Emily L. Chaples, 22, has been accepted as a Peace Corps volunteer and will depart Sept. 28 for Ukraine. She will be a secondary education teacher, teaching English and working alongside Ukrainians on community projects in a 27-month assignment. The daughter of Daniel and Cyndi Hickman, Chaples is a Springfield Local High School graduate and earned a bachelor's degree in English and creative writing at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky., in 2006.
Assistant chief hired
BROOKFIELD -- Brookfield Township trustees hired veteran firefighter Hays Montgomery as assistant chief of the volunteer fire department and promoted Matt Gordon, a full-time firefighter-paramedic with the township, to captain. Montgomery replaces Mark Christy, who died in January. Montgomery, 38, of state Route 7 Northeast, joined the department as a junior firefighter in 1983. He became a firefighter in 1986, was promoted to captain in 1993, then to assistant chief in 2004.
Foreign language classes
Fall foreign languages are being taught in these communities: German I, Italian I and Spanish I will be offered in the Poland/Springfield area on Tuesdays, Hermitage on Wednesdays, Austintown on Thursdays and Hubbard on Mondays. German and Italian II will be offered at Hermitage and Austintown. Classes begin the week of Sept. 25. Call for school locations and fees at (330) 758-0361.
Hartford car show
HARTFORD - The ninth annual Hartford Apple Festival Cruise-in will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 17 at Hartford United Methodist Church, state Route 305, a quarter-mile west of Hartford Square. The car show is part of the 43rd annual Hartford Apple Festival, from Friday to next Sunday at the Hartford Elementary School, state Routes 7 and 305. During the cruise-in, dash plaques will be given to the owners of the first 75 cars. There will be music provided by disc jockey Goody, door prizes, food and beverages.
Computer classes
YOUNGSTOWN -- New Hope Baptist Church, 437 Albert St., will offer computer classes at 6 p.m. Mondays from Oct. 23-Nov. 27. There will be an introduction to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Seating is limited. For reservations, call the church at (330) 743-0823.
Library lot to be repaired
YOUNGSTOWN -- The parking lot at Main Library, 305 Wick Ave., will close Monday for approximately two weeks for repairs and resurfacing. The library will remain open. Patrons will be routed to a temporary entrance on Rayen Avenue.
