GIRARD -- Firefighters are investigating a blaze that destroyed a vacant house on Trumbull Avenue. The fire department was called about 9:15 a.m. Sunday. The cause hasn't been determined, but it's believed to have started on the second floor. A firefighter attempted to get into the house when the walls started to cave in. The firefighter wasn't injured.
Two drivers injured
JOHNSTON -- The Warren post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a traffic accident that sent two people to the hospital. The patrol said Tiffany Hanson, 19, of Cortland, was traveling west on state Route 88 Saturday afternoon when a pickup truck, driven by John Jacques, 52, of Orwell, eastbound on Route 88, lost control and went left of center, striking Hanson's vehicle head-on. Hanson was treated at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Jacques was flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center. A hospital official said he left the hospital Sunday.
Seat endowments
CANFIELD -- Cardinal Nest Builders, an organization that is raising money to renovate athletic facilities at Canfield High School, says seat endowments are available.
The group has already raised funds to replace the turf on the field and to install a new band shell and is now raising money for new home and away bleachers. For $200, individuals and groups can memorialize a loved one or a special event with an inscribed brass plate that will be mounted on a stadium seat.

Literacy grant
SHARON, Pa. -- A $10,000 state grant will be used to help raise literacy rates in the Sharon City School District. The funds from the Community Revitalization Program will pay for books and other material for three elementary schools. The district also will make a literacy instructor available to pupils.
Ornamentals workshop
CANFIELD -- The Ohio State University Extension of Mahoning County presents the 55th Ohio Ornamental Plant Diagnostic Workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 at Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., Youngstown, for commercial and amateur plant caregivers. The registration fee is $30. This includes lunch, refreshments and program material. Registration can be paid by mail or in person at Ohio State University Extension-Mahoning County, 490 S.
