Farm bureau makes donations to organizations

YOUNGSTOWN -- In honor of national "Food Check-Out Week," which begins Sunday, Mahoning County Farm Bureau is making donations of $250 each to the Second Harvest Food Bank, Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley and the South Range Council of Church and Community, said Mary Moore, the farm bureau's promotion and education chairwoman.
Americans benefit from a safe, reliable food supply that remains remarkably affordable, Moore said.
In just 37 days, the average American will have earned enough disposable income to pay for his or her food supply for the entire year, both at home and away from home, the bureau said in a press release.
The bounty of safe, affordable food produced by America's farmers and ranchers benefits consumers, who pay less for food than citizens of any other country in the world, the bureau said.
On average, Americans spend only about 10 percent of their disposable income on food, says U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics.
