YOUNGSTOWN -- Because of icy road conditions, a city school bus traveling east on Tod Lane around 9 a.m. Wednesday slid through the intersection at Elm Street and was struck by a car, said Ted Terlesky, head of school security.
No children were on the bus and the bus driver was not injured.
Terlesky said the accident is under investigation by the chief of transportation.
The car's woman driver was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment, he said.
Beauty store robbed
FARRELL, Pa. -- Two men feigned an interest in beauty products before robbing Beauty Plus on Sharon New Castle Road, said Southwest Mercer County Regional Police Department. Store owner Mike Safi was injured when two men tied him up in the back of the store at 2:22 p.m. Tuesday. One man kept a gun on Safi as the other ransacked the store, taking an undetermined amount of cash, police said. Police said the men came in the Centre Plaza store asking questions about a product before pointing a chrome-plated handgun at the owner.
Hearing set in theft
NILES -- A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Feb. 1 for Lester K. Cox, of North Chestnut Street, on a charge of aggravated robbery in which two people were injured.
He appeared Wednesday before Municipal Judge Thomas W. Townley, who set bond at $25,000.
According to the police report, Cox walked into Niles Fuel Plus on West Park Avenue around 4 a.m. Jan. 7. He indicated he had a gun, but it was actually a hairbrush.
A fight broke out involving Cox, a co-owner and an employee in which the co-owner and employee were injured. Police said Cox was identified using the store surveillance camera and arrested by police Tuesday when they spotted him crossing a city street.
Man faces charges
NILES -- Henry Cain Jr., 25, of Belmont Avenue, Warren, is in Trumbull County Jail on a $102,500 bond on charges of kidnapping, burglary, assault and domestic violence in the beating of his former girlfriend.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday before Municipal Judge Thomas W. Townley.
A police report says Cain forced his way into the Peffer Avenue home of his ex-girlfriend at 7 a.m. Jan. 21. He allegedly bit and punched her, held her captive and threatened to kill her if she contacted police. He then left he residence.
Fire investigation
SHARON, Pa. -- Firefighters continue investigating the cause of a West Side house fire. They were called to 79 S. Irvine Ave. at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters said the two-story house sustained heavy damage in the basement and both upper floors. It was currently unoccupied, but owned by Carl and Martha Hanti. The couple still kept some of their possessions in the house, firefighters said. No one was injured.
Henkel sentenced
YOUNGSTOWN -- A North Benton man has been sentenced to concurrent three-year prison terms for trying to kill his father.
Daniel R. Henkel, 21, of North Benton West Road, previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder and felonious assault. Judge Maureen A. Cronin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Henkel on Wednesday.
Prosecutors said the Henkel family was at home last Feb. 28 when the power went out. James Henkel went to the basement in the dark to check the electrical box, and Daniel was waiting there and stabbed him.
Daniel is the Henkels' adopted son and has a long history of mental illness, prosecutors have said.
Judge reverses ruling
HUBBARD -- A ruling in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court has gone against Police Chief Martin Kanetsky and in favor of the city. Judge W. Wyatt McKay reversed a ruling by the Hubbard Civil Service Commission that Kanetsky be reimbursed for 20 hours withheld by the city for "improper and unapproved use of vacation leave." Kanetsky is on administrative leave from the department for unrelated matters.
