Local groups receive grants



Four area county groups received money.
CANFIELD -- The American Cancer Society, Ohio Division awarded 45 Community Investment Grants, totaling $150,000, to agencies and nonprofit organizations, groups and agencies throughout Ohio.
Several grants were awarded to organizations in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Jefferson counties.
In addition, 12 other groups or agencies in Ohio received collaboration grants that will be used to provide programs to the community in cooperation with the local American Cancer Society office.
Funding for the grants is made possible from proceeds from Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society's signature activity and fund-raiser. In 2005, the Relay For Life raised more than $15 million in Ohio, with relays in Carroll, Columbiana, Jefferson, Mahoning and Trumbull counties netting some $2 million.
The local agencies or nonprofits that received a grant and the county in which it will be used are:
UColumbiana County: The Colon or Rectal Education and Support Group, $3,500; East Liverpool City Hospital, $4,000, smoke cessation.
UTrumbull County: Humility of Mary Health Partners, $4,000, tobacco education and breast cancer prevention in the black community.
Agencies and groups awarded collaborative grants to be used in cooperation with the local American Cancer Society office in Canfield are:
UMahoning County: The Colon or Rectal Education and Support Group, emphasizing early detection in the black community.
UTrumbull County: Trumbull County YMCA, The Employees Who C.A.R.E. (Cancer Awareness through Regular Activity and Eating Right), an employee wellness program.
UMahoning and Trumbull counties: Forum Health Cancer Care Centers, Breast Cancer Early Detection and Prevention in the Workplace.
UJefferson County: Trinity Health System, for cancer survivors and caregivers.
