J.J. Redick's 34 points lead Duke's 87-77 win



Second-ranked Florida beat Auburn and Texas smothered No. 3 Villanova.

CLEMSON, S.C. -- J.J. Redick scored 34 points and Shelden Williams added 17 points and 11 rebounds as No. 1 Duke beat Clemson for the 19th straight time, 87-77 on Saturday.
The Blue Devils (16-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are off to their best start since the 1992 NCAA champions opened 17-0.
Duke hasn't lost to the Tigers (13-4, 2-2) since 1997, but it took just about everything Redick had to keep the streak going.
The Blue Devils let an 11-point lead slip to 76-71 after Akin Akingbala's short jumper with 1:56 left. But Redick dribbled up the court and found a wide-open Sean Dockery for a layup and Clemson could not get any closer.
Vernon Hamilton led Clemson with a career-high 31 points.
No. 2 Florida 69, Auburn 57
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Taurean Green scored 21 points, Al Horford added 14 and Florida remained unbeaten.
Green made six free throws over the final 5:25 to help the Gators (16-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) extend the best start and longest winning streak in school history.
The sophomore point guard finished 12-of-12 from the free throw line, made three 3-pointers and led Florida in scoring for the second consecutive game.
This one was close until the Gators put together a 10-0 spurt midway through the second half, a run that included seven points from Chris Richard.
Richard had a dunk, a turnaround jumper in the lane, a free throw and a layup during the stretch, which turned a 49-47 lead into a 12-point advantage.
No. 8 Texas 58, No. 3 Villanova 55
AUSTIN, Texas -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and Texas smothered Villanova with its best defensive game of the year.
Aldridge scored eight points in the final 4 minutes, including two free throws with 8.3 seconds left that gave Texas a three-point lead. Daniel Gibson hit two more free throws with 3.9 seconds left before Villanova's Randy Foye bounced a running 3-pointer wide left off the backboard.
Kenton Paulino added 13 points for Texas (14-2) which has won six straight since a mid-December slump, including two wins over Top 10 opponents.
Foye, Kyle Lowry and Allan Ray each scored 13 points for Villanova (11-2), which was 7-of-30 from 3-point range after coming in shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc.
No. 4 Connecticut 74,Georgetown 67
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Hilton Armstrong had 19 points -- His sixth straight game scoring in double figures -- and six blocked shots for Connecticut.
The Huskies (14-1, 2-1 Big East) shot a season-high 60 percent in beating the Hoyas (10-4, 2-2) for the 11th straight time.
Brandon Bowman led Georgetown with 20 points and Jeff Green added 13 points and eight rebounds.
No. 7 Illinois 79, Michigan 74
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Dee Brown scored 26 points and James Augustine added 23 as Illinois withstood a second-half charge from Michigan to beat the Wolverines for the 11th straight time.
The win was Illinois' 31st in a row at the Assembly Hall, tying the school record set between Jan. 15, 1984 and Jan. 4, 1986. Michigan (11-3, 1-2 Big Ten) hasn't beaten the Illini (16-1, 2-1) since a 95-91 double overtime victory on Jan. 16, 2000.
After Michigan's 10-0 run gave it a 70-69 lead on Dion Harris' two free throws with 4:01 left, Augustine put the Illini back into the lead with two free throws. His layup 56 seconds later gave the Illini a 73-70 lead and they outscored the Wolverines 6-4 down the stretch.
Daniel Horton scored 19 points and Courtney Sims added 16 for Michigan.
No. 13 Washington 69, No. 11 UCLA 65
LOS ANGELES -- Bobby Jones pulled down a key rebound and made three free throws in the final seconds to give Washington its first win at Pauley Pavilion in nearly 19 years.
Jamaal Williams had 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting for Washington (14-2, 3-2 Pac-10), while Jones had 11.
Washington overcame a 12-point halftime deficit, shooting 64 percent in the second half to win its first game at Pauley Pavilion since Jan. 29, 1987. The Huskies have won all three of their road games this season.
No. 15 Boston College 90, Florida St. 87
BOSTON -- Craig Smith had 28 points and 14 rebounds to lead Boston College to its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference victory despite a career-high 37 points from Al Thornton of the Seminoles.
Jared Dudley scored 25 points for BC (12-4, 1-3), including a second-chance dunk that put the Eagles up 85-81 after Florida State (11-3, 2-2) hit two 3-pointers to cut a 14-point deficit to two.
No. 16 West Virginia 104, Marquette 85
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Mike Gansey scored a career-high 33 points despite hurting an ankle and Kevin Pittsnogle had 30 as West Virginia broke its own Big East record with 20 3-pointers.
The Mountaineers (12-3, 4-0) won their 10th straight game, the longest streak since 1988-89, when they won 22 in a row. They are 4-0 in the conference for the first time.
West Virginia went 20-of-38 from 3-point range, breaking the conference mark of 18 it set last year against Louisville in the NCAA regional finals.
No. 17 George Washington 82,Saint Joseph's 70
WASHINGTON -- Carl Elliott scored a career-high 20 points and George Washington held Saint Joseph's scoreless for nearly six minutes in the first half.
GW (12-1, 3-0 Atlantic 10) needed to rally from second-half deficits to win its previous two games in overtime. The Colonials never trailed and led by as many as 21 points against Saint Joseph's (6-7, 1-3), which has lost four of five.
Chet Stachitas and Dwayne Lee each had 14 points for Saint Joseph.
No. 18 N.C. State 87,Georgia Tech 78
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Cameron Bennerman had 16 points and four of his teammates added 14 for North Carolina State, which is off to its best start since the Jim Valvano era.
Engin Atsur, Tony Bethel, Cedric Simmons and reserve Andrew Brackman all had 14 points and Ilian Evtimov finished with 13 for N.C. State (14-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Wolfpack last won 14 of their first 16 games in 1988-89, when Valvano led them to East Regional semifinals.
Miami 81, No. 20 North Carolina 70
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Guillermo Diaz scored 24 points -- including a clutch 3-pointer with 1:37 left -- to help Miami to its first win ever in Chapel Hill.
Robert Hite also had 24 points for the Hurricanes (10-6, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who beat the Tar Heels (10-3, 2-1) for just the second time.
No. 21 Wisconsin 68, Northwestern 52
MADISON, Wis. -- Alando Tucker had 20 points and seven rebounds and Wisconsin remained the only unbeaten team in Big Ten play.
Northwestern (9-6, 2-2) came into the game with the stingiest defense in the conference and were averaging a league-low 11.7 turnovers a game. But Wisconsin (14-2, 4-0) used a first-half flurry to build a double-digit lead, went on another run in the second half to put it away and forced Northwestern into 19 turnovers.
Vedran Vukusic scored 15 points for Northwestern.
No. 22 Oklahoma 45, Texas A & amp;M 44
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Terrell Everett hit a 3-pointer with 6.1 seconds left and Oklahoma avoided an 0-3 start in the Big 12.
Everett scored 15 points and Taj Gray added 13 for the Sooners (10-4, 1-2), who beat A & amp;M for the 13th straight time and 24th in 25 meetings. Oklahoma lost its first two conference games by a total of three points, both in the final seconds.
Oregon 73, No. 24 Arizona 68
EUGENE, Ore. -- Malik Hairston scored 23 points to lead Oregon.
Hairston scored 18 points in the second half as the Ducks (9-8, 3-2 Pac-10) beat the Wildcats (10-6, 3-3) for the first time since 2002, a span of seven games.
