Howland edges Canfield, 56-55



Mike Johnson's putback basketball was the difference for the Tigers.
HOWLAND -- Senior Mike Johnson's basket on a putback with one second remaining was the determining factor Friday as the Howland High basketball team defeated Canfield, 56-55.
Howland battled back to pull within 55-50 with two minutes left in the tight Metro Athletic Conference contest.
Howland drew a charging call and then made a steal to generate some offense before Johnson's game-winner on a missed layup.
Dario Hadzovic had 21 points, Tony Pozega 16 and Nathan Cope 11 for the Tigers (4-6, 1-1).
Howland trailed 30-16 in the second quarter before catching up to pull within two at the end of the third period.
Mike Rounsavall had 18 points for Canfield.
Salem 38, Poland 34
POLAND -- Tom Jesko, Tyler Pierce and Ryan Benchwick each scored nine points for the Quakers.
For the Bulldogs (4-5, 0-2), Anthony DeFelice, Chris Lovell and Louis Coppola each scored nine points. Daniel Bennett pulled down eight rebounds and Dom Schneider made four assists.
West Branch 60, Marlington 43
MARLINGTON -- Kyle Rockwell had 17 points and seven rebounds and Shane Young added 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead West Branch in a Northeastern Buckeye Conference game.
Andy Pappas added 11 points and Brandon McMillan had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Warriors (7-2, 4-2).
Kyle Miller scored 15 to lead Marlington.
Southeast 61, Crestwood 51
RAVENNA -- Micah Herndon scored 28 points and Frank Lochner had 13 for the Pirates.
Jon Surgeon produced 20 points and Alan Vanderink 17 for Crestwood.
