January 11, 1981: Mahoning County's new sheriff, James A. Traficant Jr., is calling in county cars and gasoline credit cards issued to sheriff's department employees.
Mahoning County residents can expect to pay the half-cent permissive sales and use tax again in 1981, says Commissioner George Bindas. The tax was repealed by voters in November, but Bindas says the county cannot operate with a 55 percent cutback in its general fund income and commissioners will have to vote to reimpose it.

January 11, 1966: The Youngstown prosecutor's office will complete its investigation before deciding whether to file charges against a St. Dominic School lay teacher, Bonnie Barone, whose gun accidentally discharged in her purse in the school cafeteria, wounding two girls.
A $400,000 supplementary education center that would include a planetarium and an observatory is being sought by the Austintown Board of Education through a federal grant. The two-story structure would be built in conjunction with the new high school that was approved in a bond issue in November.
The Youngstown Board of Control clears the way for construction of a new $5 million science and engineering building at Youngstown University by transferring land on Lincoln Ave. to the university.
January 11, 1956: City spending will exceed $11 million in 1956 as Youngstown City Council approves a record appropriation ordinance, an increase of $1.4 million over 1955 expenditures. Council approves 81 new jobs requested by Mayor Frank X. Kryzan, but draws his wrath for four proposed new jobs in the water department.

Youngstown police and post office authorities open an investigation into the discovery of an empty mail pouch in a hollow back of the bleachers at Oakland Field by John Goske. The pouch disappeared Jan. 4 from the Erie Railroad.
George Stevenson, 58, city chemist for more than 30 years, dies in the North Side unit of Youngstown Hospital of heart trouble.
