WARREN -- Representatives from the financial aid office of the Trumbull Campus of Kent State University will present a program on financial aid for the college-bound at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Thomas Meeting Room at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Avenue N.W. The program will be repeated at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in the community room at the library's Liberty Branch, 415 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Liberty Township. The program will include information on applying for financial assistance, including when to apply, what types of federal student aid are available and information needed for a financial-aid profile. No reservations are required.
Tomlinson heads center
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Dr. Virginia Moore Tomlinson, associate professor of sociology at Westminster College, was chosen as director of the Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Westminster College. The Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was developed to advance world-class teaching and learning at Westminster and enrich K-12 education through outreach programs for area educators. "I am excited about the possibilities offered by this position," Tomlins on said. "The integrative nature of this position provides the opportunity for supporting and working with students, faculty and the community." She said that the center has workshop and camps for teachers and students, such as The Summer K-12 Teaching Academy, Education Leadership Program, Summer Music and Performing Arts Youth Camps and Teacher workshops.
Award for partnerships
WASHINGTON -- The National School and Business Partnerships Award is looking for six exemplary school-business partnerships to be presented with $10,000 awards and given national recognition. Applications are now available at www.corpschoolpartners.org and are due by Jan. 30. Applications are judged on how well the school-business partnership demonstrates success in four categories: How the partnership was initially established, how the partners work together on an ongoing basis, how the partners work to sustain the partnership over time and the impact the partnership has on the business and school communities. The Council for Corporate & amp; School Partnerships, which runs the program, was founded by The Coca-Cola Co. to identify, create, recognize and support exemplary partnerships between businesses and schools.
Chosen for program
POLAND -- Shaina Mathur, a Poland Seminary High School student, has been selected to attend the Presidential Classroom Law & amp; Justice in a Democracy Program in Washington, D.C., in June. The program is designed to provide civic education to outstanding high school students, expanding their knowledge of politics, government and the roles and responsibilities of institutions and organizations involved in policy-making. Participants work on a group project and have the opportunity to earn college credit at the University of Virginia during the program.
Competition on ethics
Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley Inc. is looking for high school seniors with writing skills who would like to compete for a $5,000 college scholarship. The "Excellence through Ethics" essay contest sponsored by Deloitte & amp; Touch USA LLP runs through Feb. 3. Interested students should visit the JA Student Center at www.ja.org, read the ethical dilemma and compose an original 500-word essay which can be submitted online. The winner will be selected by the Junior Achievement Blue Ribbon Panel on Ethics.
Forensics coach honored
NILES -- John N. Revezzo, forensics coach at Niles McKinley High School, has been awarded a fifth diamond by the National Forensic League. The NFL has awarded only 68 diamonds in its 80-year history. A minimum of 25 years of coaching and having students who have earned a minimum of 130,000 credit points in debate and contest speaking are required to earn the honor. Revezzo was cited for demonstrating the highest standards of competitive excellence, exhibiting the rare gifts of a superb classroom teacher and the critical leadership abilities in professional organizations involved in the betterment of forensics. He will receive special recognition at the Lincoln Financial Group/NFL National Tournament in Texas in June.
Kindergarten screening
BESSEMER, Pa. -- Mohawk Elementary School will hold a kindergarten screening Jan. 25 and 26 for children who will be age 5 before Sept. 1. Parents or guardians must bring each child's birth certificate, Social Security card and immunization record. Participants must schedule their child's screening time by calling (724) 667-7749.
Kindergarten packets
CHAMPION -- Kindergarten registration packets for Champion Central Elementary School are available now in the principal's office. Children who will be age 5 by Aug. 1 are eligible to enroll for the 2006-07 term. Completed packets must be returned to the school office by Feb. 16 to receive a screening appointment. New kindergarten pupils will be screened May 4 and 5. To register, parents must supply an original copy of the child's birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization record and a current gas or electric bill to prove residency. If applicable, an original copy of current custody papers complete with the court seal may also be required.
