American Cancer Society gives college scholarships to survivors

Last year $105,000 in scholarships was awarded.
The American Cancer Society is giving scholarships to young cancer survivors in Ohio to assist them in their pursuit of higher education.
The scholarships are for the 2006-07 academic year. This is the seventh year for the program, society officials said.
Scholarship applications must be postmarked by Feb. 1. Applicants will be notified in May of their funding status.
Last year, $1,000 scholarships were granted to 105 college-bound cancer survivors from across the state.
Proceeds from Relay
This scholarship program is made possible through proceeds from Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society's signature activity to honor cancer survivors and their families, society officials said. During relays, organized teams raise money and walk around a track to symbolize that "there is no finish line until there is a cure." Relays vary from 18 to 24 hours, officials said.
Scholarship applicants must be residents of Ohio, United States citizens, diagnosed with cancer before age 21, under the age of 25 at the time of application and plan to attend an accredited university or community college in the United States.
All scholarships will be awarded by the Society's volunteer scholarship review committee and will be based on scholastic performance, community service and leadership.
