ON THE SIDE. . .

ON THE SIDE. . .
This and that from the world of Valley politics.
ALL IN A DAY'S WORK: "It's not the kill. It's the thrill of the chase."
As every typical fan of mid-1980s rock knows that lyric is from Deep Purple's "Knocking at Your Back Door."
It's sort of how I felt Tuesday. I returned from vacation to learn that Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams was going to announce the appointment of seven Cabinet members the following day.
Williams had originally scheduled the announcement while I was on vacation, but had to delay the decision because of the holidays.
When I returned to work Tuesday I figured I'd play amateur detective and figure out who Williams was going to appoint the next day.
Williams helped with two appointments because he requested the city's Civil Service Commission hold a special meeting Tuesday to hire two people for high-level posts in the finance and water departments. That made it easy to figure out who Williams was going to name to head those two agencies.
As for the other appointments, a combination of being able to read Williams as well as reliable sources and city hall gossip helped me figure those out. The only uncertainty was prosecutor, and that was because Williams waited until I left work Tuesday to call Jay Macejko after I told him I was going to contact Macejko about the appointment.
