Liberty rallies past Newton Falls, 56-50



The Leopards won despite playing without top scorer Ashley Whit.
LIBERTY -- After losing top scorer Ashley White to an injury in the second quarter, the Liberty High girls basketball team regrouped behind Michelle Dykes' 19 points to drop Newton Falls 56-50 in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game on Thursday.
White, who had been averaging about 19 points a game, suffered a possible concussion.
Katie Reyzis added 11 points and 17 rebounds while Catarina Neskovich had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Melissa Dykes 10 points for the Leopards (8-2, 4-0).
Jackie Dach scored 16 points and Kortni Collins added 15 points and 14 rebounds for Newton Falls (4-6).
Lakeview 77,Girard 32
CORTLAND -- Sophomore guard Joanna Novotny had 16 points, sophomore forward Amy Downs had 15 points, junior guard Chelsea Butler had 11 points and senior forward Lindsey Whetzel had 10 points for the Bulldogs (7-2, 4-0 TAC).
Junior Alynn Martin pulled down 11 rebounds while Amy Downs grabbed 10. Martin also had eight steals and five assists.
Sarroya Townsend had eight points for Girard (1-8, 1-3).
Brookfield 56,Hubbard 36
HUBBARD -- Morgan Bonekovic poured in 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Warriors (8-2, 3-1).
Andrea Gladis added 11 points and Kari Haywood had six assists.
Tressa Scahill led the Eagles with 18 points.
Champion 51,LaBrae 41
CHAMPION -- Elizabeth Ghindia collected 17 points and 10 rebounds while Jaclyn Carpenter had 14 points and 10 assists to lead Champion (5-4, 3-1 TAC).
Jalisa Elkins scored 13 points and Maddie D'Orio 10 to pace LaBrae (4-5, 0-4 TAC).
Youngstown Christian 54,Sts. John-Paul 53
ASHTABULA -- With 14 seconds remaining in the game, the Eagles' Danielle Pecchia stole an inbound pass and threw the basketball to Kara Cooper who raced down the floor to make the winning layup in an East Suburban Conference game.
The Eagles (8-1, 3-0) are off to their best start in school history.
Three-time defending league champion St. John-Paul (6-3, 2-1) trailed 48-40 heading into the final quarter, then outscored the Eagles 13-6 in the fourth quarter.
Cooper, a sophomore point guard, had 22 points and eight steals. Danielle Pecchia added 10 points and three assists.
Angela Notte led Sts. John-Paul with 17 points. Cathlene Tinney added 11.
