Grove City 80, Pitt-Greensburg 73
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Three Grove City guards scored in double figures, helping the Wolverines earn a home win over Pitt-Greensburg (4-5) in non-conference basketball action at the Grove City College Arena. Sophomore Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk High) fired in 19 points, including four three-point goals in the second half, while sophomore Ryan Gerber added 15 points. Gerber drained three three-pointers and is now 18 for 36 (50 percent) from three-point territory this season. Sophomore Joe Capotosta added 10 points off the bench for Grove City (4-7). Grove City led wire-to-wire and led by as many as 13, 33-20, in the first half. A three-pointer from Matt Rowland cut the Grove City lead to 74-72 with 1:06 left. However, a layup by Grove City junior forward Mark Smith and two free throws from both Carr and senior point guard Matt Phillips sealed the victory. Phillips had seven assists and no turnovers while junior center Craig Hallman had a team-high seven rebounds. Grove City held a 37-27 edge on the glass. Duke Cooper led Pitt-Greensburg with a 20-point, 8-rebound, 5-assist effort. Grove City will play Albright Friday in the semifinals of Albright's TGIFriday's/Sheraton Tournament in Reading, Pa. at 8 p.m.
Baldwin-Wallace 77, Mount Union 64
ALLIANCE -- Tori Davis scored 23 points to lead Baldwin-Wallace to its seventh win in a row. The Yellow Jackets (11-1, 5-0 Ohio Conference) trailed 6-0 at the outset but took the lead for good with a 9-2 run, capped by Brendan Schuler's 3-pointer. They went on to take a 42-28 at the half on Keith Aufmuth's 3-pointer at the buzzer. Dan Gundert added 17 points and Aufmuth had 13 for Baldwin-Wallace, which led by as many as 20 points in the second half. Chris Switzer scored 10 points for Mount Union (2-10, 1-5).
Westminster 117, Thiel 100
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore guard Craig Hannon (New Castle/Union High) scored a career-high 45 points for Westminster at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. The Titans improved to 4-8 overall, 1-0 in the PAC, while the Tomcats are 2-10, 0-1 in league play. Hannon was 14-of-26 from the field, including 9-of-18 from three-point range, and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. His 45-point effort was the highest single-game total by a Titan since senior Mark DeMonaco (New Castle High) scored 47 points against Case Western Reserve as a sophomore during the 2003-04 season. Hannon also fell just five points shy of the Titans' single-game record of 50 points set by John Fontanella in 1967. DeMonaco added 22 points in the win, while adding team-high totals of seven assists and four steals. Chauncey Whitlow (Woodrow Wilson High) had 16 points. Jake Zatchok (Berlin Center/Western Reserve High) grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Thiel was paced by freshman James Beedle with 29 points.
Kent St. 76, Toledo 68
KENT -- Jay Youngblood scored 20 points, Omni Smith added 19 and Kent State got off to a quick start. The Golden Flashes (7-5, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) never trailed, scoring the game's first 12 points. After Isaac Knight hit two free throws, Youngblood hit a 3-pointer and later added a jumper and a foul shot. Knight and DeAndre Haynes, who finished with 15 points, each added baskets in the early spurt. Kent State shot 50 percent from the field in the first half in building a 38-25 lead. Keonta Howell had 23 points, Justin Ingram 18 and Florentino Valencia 10 for the Rockets (7-3, 0-2). In the second half Toledo got as close as 56-53 on Howell's 3-pointer with 8:27 left before Kent State pulled away with a 9-0 run. Haynes, who was 3-for-3 on 3-pointers, hit a shot behind the arc, as did Jordan Mincy, before Smith hit two free throws and Youngblood added another to make it 65-53 by the 5:23 mark. The Golden Flashes held a nine-point edge at the line, hitting 17-for-28 free throws to Toledo's 8-for-10.
WOMEN
Baldwin-Wallace 60, Mount Union 55
BEREA -- Senior guard Nikki Atenweg scored 12 points for 12th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College. The Yellow Jackets improved to 10-2 and 5-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Lauren Friedrich paced the Purple Raiders (7-5, 2-3) with 18 points.
Thiel 61, Westminster 60
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Fontella Jones hit a game-winning layup with 10 seconds to play, lifting Thiel at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The Tomcats improved to 3-10 overall, 1-0 in the PAC with the win, while the Lady Titans fell to 2-11, 0-1 in conference play. Trailing by one in the final minute, the Lady Titans went ahead with 26 seconds to play as a driving layup by sophomore guard/forward Emilee Ackerman put Westminster up 60-59. However, on the ensuing Thiel possession, Jones received the ball on the right block and backed down her defender for the go-ahead layup. Thiel was paced in the win by freshman Amber Bodrick (Mooney High) with team-high totals of 22 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Ackerman was the lone Westminster player to score in double figures with 20 points. Junior guard Desiree Sterling (Newton Falls High) and junior forward Talley Felger (Petersburg/Springfield) grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively, for the Lady Titans, who out-rebounded the Tomcats 41-36. Sophomore guard Allison Ginnetti (Struthers High) came off the bench to dish out a team-best six assists.
