MILWAUKEE -- Steve Novak had career highs of 41 points and 16 rebounds and Marquette won its first Big East game with a 94-79 upset of No. 2 Connecticut on Tuesday night.
The 6-foot-10 Novak set a record for the most points by a player in his Big East debut, breaking the record of 30 shared by Notre Dame's Troy Murphy in 1998 and Georgetown's Allen Iverson in 1994.
The victory spoiled the return of Huskies junior guard Marcus Williams who was suspended for the first semester over the theft of laptops from a dormitory.
Jerel McNeal added 19 points and 12 rebounds for Marquette (11-3, 1-0), one of five schools that joined the now 16-team Big East in the offseason from Conference USA.
Rashad Anderson scored 25 points for Connecticut (11-1, 0-1).

Central Florida (6-6) tied the game with 25 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Mike O'Donnell, but Rondo, who finished with 13 points, hit the game-winner for the Wildcats (10-3).

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Trent Strickland made all the big plays on both ends of the court, finishing with 20 points and nine rebounds to help Wake Forest hold off pesky East Carolina.
Eric Williams added 13 points and had the go-ahead free throw despite making only five of 13 from the line for the Demon Deacons (11-2), who tuned up for their Atlantic Coast Conference opener against No. 1 Duke with an uninspired effort.

Brendan Winters scored 18 points for the Wildcats (7-5), who came in averaging 85 points per game but managed just 12 through the first 18 minutes. The Wildcats shot 32 percent and committed 20 turnovers, while the Tar Heels took a 54-31 edge on the boards.
