Grant to fund renovations at HSC building

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A $25,000 grant from the Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust Fund of Pittsburgh will be used to renovate a Human Services Center building at 302 N. Mercer St.
The property is partly used by the center's early intervention program that serves children who exhibit developmental delays and deficits, said Roger Smith, director of community services for HSC.
Smith said grants from the Trees fund are given exclusively to projects that serve children with disabilities.
Smith said the entire renovation cost $180,000 and included new electric, plumbing, heating and air conditioning for the building.
Operation Outward Reach, a program that provides work experience for prisoners about to be released from the state correctional institute at Mercer, was used to complete the renovations. Smith said the work should be finished by the end of January.
The grant will offset the costs of renovating office space used by case managers working in the early intervention program.
