AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown Fitch Jazz and the Youngstown Area Community Concert bands will perform a concert to benefit the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves' "Toys For Tots" program at 7 p.m. Dec. 5. The concert will be at Fitch High School auditorium, and the price of admission is a new toy valued at $10 or more. The program, dedicated to children, will feature two bands of different styles. The Jazz Band will perform in various swing, rock and Latin styles. The community band will present its program in a more formal concert setting, including favorites "Babes in Toyland," "A Canadian Brass Noel" and "'Twas the Night before Christmas" with band and narrator.
U.S. has eye on auction
CLEVELAND -- The U.S. attorney's office has taken an interest in this Sunday's auction in Brookfield of items belonging to former U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. When sentenced in July, Traficant was told that he owes a $96,000 forfeiture and $150,000 fine, the latter being the cost of his incarceration. William J. Edwards, first assistant U.S. attorney in Cleveland, said today that his office's civil division is "taking appropriate steps" and doing research to determine if the auction proceeds are subject to seizure to satisfy what Traficant owes.
In St. E's after shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 41-year-old LaBelle Avenue man was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center early Sunday after being shot in the parking lot of Larry's Lounge on Hillman Street, police said. The victim told police he was leaving the bar about 2:15 a.m. when he was punched in the head and shot in the abdomen.
Helping women and kids
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a local fraternity at YSU, is once again sponsoring a community service fund-raiser concerning domestic violence awareness, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday-Dec. 6 in Kilcawley Center. Fraternity brothers will be distributing information on domestic violence and raising money to provide Christmas presents and supplies for the children of the Sojourner House. This is a local charity that provides a safe anonymous place for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Last year, ∑AE collected more than $1,200 in just five days, which was used to purchase toys and supplies. Any unwrapped children's presents or any other financial donations are welcomed.
Arrested after chase
AUSTINTOWN -- Police arrested a Youngstown woman Sunday after a car chase that ended on Donald Avenue. Jerries Stark, 21, of Lakewood Avenue is charged with driving under the influence, failing to stay within marked lanes, and not having operating taillights. Reports state police tried to stop Stark's car about 1:20 a.m. on Crum Road for not having taillights and crossing over the center line. Stark stopped at a red light at the Meridian Road intersection, and police approached her car. Stark then drove off, police said. Police followed her onto Vestal Road and into a driveway on Donald Drive, where she stopped and opened her car door. She was arrested. Stark later told police that she had two glasses of liquor before the chase. She refused to take a Breathalyzer test, police said.
Brothers' dispute
AUSTINTOWN -- Two men who fought in a Westchester Drive apartment Friday told police they had a dispute over the Ohio State-Michigan football game. Police received a call about 10:40 p.m. about a loud argument in the apartment. The two men, 32 and 39, who live in the apartment and are brothers, said the argument had been over the game. No arrests were made.
Reports of vandalism
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating reports that paint balls were fired Sunday at three homes on Ridgeview Drive, two homes on Fairview Road and a home on Regal Drive. Siding and window screens on some of the homes were damaged. Police also are investigating reports that a BB gun was fired late last week at Don's Hair Den on South Raccoon Road and at Dick Adgate Florist on Mahoning Avenue. Windows on both businesses were damaged. The glass front door to Don's Hair Den also was damaged.
