COLLEGE FOOTBALL Clarett is Big Ten's freshman of the year

The running back broke Ohio State's freshman running record.
PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) -- Maurice Clarett, who broke Robert Smith's freshman rushing record at Ohio State, was named the Big Ten freshman of the year Tuesday by both conference coaches and a media panel.
Despite missing three games with injuries, Clarett, a graduate of Warren Harding High, rushed for 1,190 yards, breaking Smith's previous mark of 1,126. He also set Ohio State freshman records for touchdowns (16), points scored (96) and 100-yard games (seven). He ranks second in the country in scoring (9.6 points per game) and 16th in rushing (119 yards).
There was a split for the conference defensive honors. Coaches named Ohio State defensive back Michael Doss their defensive player of the year, while the media picked Penn State lineman Michael Haynes.
Doss was the second-leading tackler for Ohio State, which has the country's No. 2 scoring defense. A two-time All-American, he had 98 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Haynes led the Big Ten in sacks (14 1/2), tackles for loss (22) and forced fumbles (seven).
Iowa honors
Iowa quarterback Brad Banks was named the Big Ten offensive player of the year.
Banks leads the nation with a 166.1 passer rating, and his 229.7 yards of total offense per game is second in the Big Ten. He passed for 25 touchdowns this year while throwing only four interceptions.
With Banks leading the way, the Hawkeyes finished 11-1 and are No. 4 in the nation. Their 8-0 record in the Big Ten earned them a share of the conference title for the first time since 1990.
That earned the Hawkeyes other Big Ten honors, too. Kirk Ferentz was named coach of the year by the media, while offensive guard Eric Steinbach was named offensive lineman of the year.
Center Bruce Nelson, tackle Robert Gallery and tight end Dallas Clark joined Banks and Steinbach on both first teams for offense. Defensive lineman Colin Cole and defensive back Bob Sanders made both first teams for defense.
Other picks
Others named to both first teams for offense were: Penn State running back Larry Johnson, Michigan State receiver Charles Rogers and Michigan guard David Baas.
Those making both teams for defense were: Cole, Doss, Haynes, Sanders, Penn State lineman Jimmy Kennedy, Michigan linebacker Victor Hobson, Ohio State linebacker Matt Wilhelm, Michigan defensive back Marlin Jackson and Ohio State punter Andy Groom.
