SHARPSVILLE Board leases part of building for charter school project

SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- The Sharpsville School Board will provide a home for the proposed Advanced Charter Enterprise School.
The school board voted Monday to lease 20,000 square feet in its South Pymatuning Elementary School building to the charter school project at a cost of $90,000 a year.
That's about half of the building, said Dr. Derry Stufft, superintendent. The district has leased some of the other space to two small commercial operations, he said.
Sharpsville moved its pupils out of the building last year when it opened a new elementary school in the borough.
The charter school, being put together by the 12 public school superintendents in Mercer County and the Mercer County Behavioral Health Commission, will accept up to 100 pupils in grades two through seven who can't function in a regular classroom because of behavioral or emotional problems.
The state has yet to issue a charter for the new school, and getting a location is part of the charter application process.
Stufft said Sharpsville will still be able to use the gymnasium-cafeteria and restroom areas for its evening recreation programs as well as have access to a basement well to use for watering athletic fields around the building.
