NEW YORK -- Many women who are undergoing treatment for cancer say changes in their appearances affect their quality of life.
Look Good ... Feel Better, a public service support program created by the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association Foundation, believes that if a woman feels better about how she looks, her improved self-esteem will help her approach her disease and treatment with confidence and renewed strength.
The program, which counts the American Cancer Society and the National Cosmetology Association as its partners, offers the following tips on applying makeup during and after cancer treatment:
USince cancer therapies often leave skin dry, choose a foundation that contains moisturizing ingredients. Blend the makeup outward over the face with a dry cosmetic sponge for full coverage or a damp cosmetic sponge for light coverage.
UUse a sweep of blush to add color and vibrancy to the face. Don't apply the color any lower than the tip or your nose and no further out than your pupil. Contour with blusher to minimize puffiness.
UTo create a natural-looking eyebrow, use an eyebrow pencil in a shade that matches your hair or wig color. Find your natural eyebrow line by holding the pencil straight up against your nose, parallel to the inside corner of your eye. Draw a dot just above your brow bone.
Then, looking straight ahead, place the pencil parallel to the outside edge of the iris and draw a dot where the arch of the brow should be. Place the pencil diagonally from the bottom corner of your nose past the outside corner of your eye and draw a dot so the outer and inner dots are even.
Connect the three dots with short feathery strokes, tapering from the inner dot to the outer dot.
UEyeliner works to define the lash line and re-create the look of full lashes.
Draw a thin line along the top of the lid and use short strokes on the lower lash line, just to fill in between the lashes, then pick up the line a little at the outside corner to open up the eyes. Smudge a little eye shadow over the eyeliner to soften it and make in last longer.
Try earthy shades such as charcoal or brown. Black might look harsh unless you have dark skin.
