The former principal had set up a separate checking account.
STAFF/WIRE REPORTS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A former middle school principal accused of using money from his pupils' magazine sales to pay his gambling debts and for an extramarital affair plans to reimburse the school district, the superintendent said.
Paul Makarevich, 48, of Wampum, Lawrence County, who faces forgery and theft charges and left his position at Slippery Rock Middle School on Oct. 21, will repay more than $6,000, said Lee Beaton, superintendent of the Slippery Rock School District.
Makarevich could not be reached to comment.
Checking account
Makarevich created a checking account in 1999 that was not authorized by the Slippery Rock School District, police said. School district officials didn't learn about the account until this summer and then requested the investigation, authorities said.
Police said Makarevich initially told them he set up the account to purchase items for pupils. He later acknowledged spending the money to cover the cost of items he did not want his wife to be aware of, such as gambling debts and an extramarital affair, authorities said.
Money placed in the Slippery Rock Middle School Student Fund came to the school from a company for which the pupils had sold magazine subscriptions, court documents said.
Makarevich was hired as supervisor of curriculum and instruction at the Neshannock School District in Lawrence County on Oct. 10, but, before starting, he resigned, saying he was seeking work in the private sector.
