Swimming teamloses to Xavier
CINCINNATI -- The Youngstown State women's swimming team was defeated by Xaiver 86-27 Saturday at the O'Conner Sports Center pool.
Sophomore Erin Carter led the Penguins with two victories. She won the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 1.71 seconds and the 100 butterfly in (1:03.20). She also was second in the 200 backstroke.
Sophomore Missy Wiese won the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100 freestyle.
Xavier jumped out front early as it set a pool record in the 200-medley relay and ended the meet with a pool record in the 400 freestyle relay.

Spikers gatherat Hubbard
HUBBARD -- The District I Senior All-Star Volleyball Classic will be held today beginning at 5 p.m. at Hubbard High's gym.
Three games featuring 57 seniors from Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be played.
District player-of-the-year and all-star awards will be handed out.

Curbstoners to hearBoardman coach
BOARDMAN -- Garry Smith, coach of Boardman High's football team, will be the guest speaker at the Curbstone Coaches' noon luncheon Monday at the Lockwood House.
Smith's team posted a 6-4 record this fall.

AUSTINTOWN -- Sam Camens, a senior on the Austintown Fitch High boys soccer team, has been named to the second team of the 2002 Division I All-Ohio High School Soccer Team as voted by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches' Association.
Camens was omitted from an article in Saturday's paper announcing the area All-Ohio selections. He was the area's only boys Div. I All-Ohio choice.
LPGA booksnow available
VIENNA -- Discounted season grounds books are available for the 2003 Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. The books will be available through the tournament office by calling (330) 565-LPGA.
During this once a year holiday promotion, the season ground books, normally priced at $40, are available for $30. The books include a ticket for all seven days of the tournament.
The 2003 tournament will be June 9-15 at Squaw Creek Country Club. Now in its 14th season, the upcoming tournament will feature first-time Giant Eagle champion Mi Hyun Kim.

Baseball Old-timersto meet Thursday
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Baseball Old-timers will hold its monthly meeting Thursday at 3 p.m. at Holiday Bowl. Nomination for officers will be conducted, along with plans for a Christmas Party. Dues will also be accepted for 2003.
Titans winsoccer titles
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Westminster women's soccer team improved to 15-5-2 Saturday by winning the championship game of the 2002 Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament.
The Titans blanked Grove City, 2-0. The victory improved Westminster's school-record unbeaten streak to 14 games (12-0-2) and marked the Titans' first PAC title.
Senior forward Tammy Newell of Hubbard scored the second goal.
The Westminster men's team also won the PAC title with a 1-0 victory over Washington & amp; Jefferson College. The Titans (16-3-2) extended their winning streak to 15.
Brownstownbeats Rockets
BOARDMAN -- John Rutkawski scored three goals to lead the Brownstown (Michigan) Bombers to a 7-3 win over the Phantom Rockets Saturday, in a Continental Elite Hockey League game at the Ice Zone.
Rutkawski's hat trick for Brownstown (5-5) neutralized the Phantom Rockets' three goals from Paul Fonte, Charlie Boivin and Mike Hanna. Chad Blumes had two assists for the Phantom Rockets (4-5).
The Phantom Rockets return to the Ice Zone today to play the Travers City (Michigan) Enforcers at 4:30 p.m.

Wimmer wins
AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Scott Wimmer won the Basha's Supermarket 200 under a yellow flag, but this was Greg Biffle's day.
Biffle clinched the NASCAR Busch Series championship on Saturday, leading all but the last 16 laps of the 200-lap race at Phoenix International Speedway. He wound up third, just ahead of series runner-up Jason Keller.
Dolphins' Cartersidelined
MIAMI -- Miami Dolphins receiver Cris Carter will be sidelined indefinitely after tests revealed kidney-function abnormalities, the team said Saturday.
Carter, who came out of retirement three weeks ago, missed practice this week because he felt ill. When he was re-evaluated Friday by team physicians, tests disclosed the abnormalities.
Carter will undergo further testing. He won't play tonight against the New York Jets and didn't accompany the Dolphins on their flight Saturday. Team officials would not elaborate on his condition and declined to say whether he had been hospitalized.
Carter retired last spring after 15 NFL seasons, then signed with the Dolphins three weeks ago to reinforce an injury-depleted receiving corps.
Angels for saledespite Series
BURBANK, Calif. -- The Walt Disney Co. remains committed to selling the Anaheim Angels despite the team's recent World Series triumph.
Disney chairman Michael Eisner said any deal involving the Angels or the Mighty Ducks of the NHL would require that the teams stay in Anaheim.
Disney consistently loses $9 million a year on the Ducks and $16 million annually on the Angels. In 2001, the Angels reported a $25,000 profit to the commissioner's office after revenue sharing.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Wally Szczerbiak sat out Minnesota's game Saturday against the Boston Celtics because of soreness in his left knee. Szczerbiak is day-to-day.
