Cheerleading meet
Teams of girls from St. Nicholas, Struthers Elementary and Struthers Middle schools won the coveted Stanley Cup of cheerleading, beating competitors from seven other school districts.
The girls competed Oct. 26 in cheerleading and dance-line competitions at Austintown Fitch High School in three divisions: 6-to-8-year-olds; 9- and 10-year-olds; and 11- and 12-year-olds, said Lynn Yemma, cheerleading adviser.
Overall scores surpassed those of teams from Alliance, Austintown, Boardman, Campbell, Canfield, Poland and Howland to net the overall trophy, which is passed from one winner to the next from year to year, Yemma said.
This year, Struthers' 6-to-8-year-olds and 9- and 10-year-olds both took first place in cheerleading; the 11- and 12-year-olds took third place.
In dance-line competition, the 6-to-8-year-olds and 9- and 10-year-olds both took second place; the 11- and 12-year-olds took fourth place.
Cheerleading coaches are Patty Antonelli, 6-to-8-year-olds; Michele Sajnovski, 9- and 10-year-olds; and Jodi Fear, 11- and 12-year-olds. Fear also coaches the dance line for 11- and 12-year-olds. Other dance-line coaches are Holly Parado, 6-to-8-year-olds, and Mary Ellks, 9- and 10-year-olds.
