HOWLAND COACHING STAFF Passing of Scott Smith touched two programs

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR
HOWLAND -- Scott Smith would have been 26-years old this Sunday, but a massive coronary attack last weekend claimed his young life.
A wake was held for him Wednesday at Kinnick Funeral Home with funeral services today and the response by those who attended was a fitting tribute to this young man's life.
Smith, a resident of Millett Avenue, graduated from Chaney High in 1995 as a three-year starter in football. As a senior he and his twin brother Shawn were All-City selections and both received the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Awards. Scott also received the Louis "Red" Angelo Scholastic Athletic Award.
Eyeing masters
Scott graduated from Youngstown State in 2000 with a bachelor of science degree and was working toward his masters. He was in his third year of teaching science and coaching football at Howland.
"Scott coached our defensive tackles when he first came here, but he wanted to work with younger kids, so the last two seasons he was with the 8th graders in our program" said Howland coach Dick Angle.
"It has been a tough week around here in much more than a football sense, because the loss of Scott Smith was the loss of an extraordinary individual," added Angle. "He had a positive influence with everybody he touched and regardless of how he felt he had a smile for everyone. He was special and he made others feel special."
Chaney coach Ron Berdis was close to the Smith family.
"Our entire program is saddened," he said. "His late father was the president of the Chaney Gridiron Club and Scott and his brother Shawn were two of the finest young men to come out of our program. They exemplified the best in student-athletes and what I remember most about Scott was that, whether it was practice or a game, he always gave his best."
