INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- NAMI (the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) of Cuyahoga County and Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare will present a conference on anxiety disorders in children and adolescents Thursday evening and all day Friday at Embassy Suites Hotel in Independence. The Thursday session is for parents, teachers, coaches, day-care providers and others who work with children. The Friday program is for mental-health providers, although family members may wish to attend. The featured speakers for both days are Aureen Pinto Wagner, Ph.D., clinical psychologist in private practice in Rochester, N.Y.; and Dr. Nora McNamara, a child psychiatrist and senior instructor of pediatrics and psychiatry at University Hospitals, Cleveland. Holidays and diabetes

Time for flu shots
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Department of Health says all Ohioans should get flu shots -- particularly high-risk individuals, such as those 65 and older and those with chronic illness such as diabetes. It generally takes two weeks after a vaccination for individuals to be immunized, according to ODH director Dr. J. Nick Baird.

Workshop for nurses

Cancer society lunch
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning County Unit of the American Cancer Society's annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon is at noon Nov. 14, at Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave.
At the luncheon, the Courage Award will be given to a cancer survivor who has demonstrated strength and bravery while dealing with the disease. An application form is available from the ACS, 525 N. Volunteers recognized
SEBRING -- The Ohio Department of Insurance recognized 74 volunteers from Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties as part of the organization's 10th anniversary celebration at Copeland Oaks retirement complex. The program provides Medicare beneficiaries with free health-insurance information and other services.
Grant to Goodwill
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Foundation awarded a $6,000 grant to Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries for janitorial equipment to service Goodwill's contracts at the federal building and courthouse in downtown Youngstown. Other Goodwill contracts are at the Vienna Air Force Reserve Station, the air traffic control tower at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, and the strategic materials depot in Niles.
Spending wisely
AUSTINTOWN -- First Ohio Chapter of the Federation of Families will present "Making Sense of Dollars & amp; Cents" from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 13 at the D & amp;E Clinic, 142 Javit Court.
