GATEWAY Martinez kicks 'Toppers to victory

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Peter Martinez made three of five field goal attempts as Western Kentucky beat Illinois State 9-0 Saturday night.
The Hilltoppers (7-3, 5-1) remained tied with Western Illinois for first place in the Gateway Conference.
Western Kentucky's defense dominated the game, as the Redbirds (5-4, 3-2) never crossed into Hilltoppers territory. Illinois State managed just 58 yards passing and 62 rushing yards.
Martinez made kicks of 20 and 34 yards in the second quarter and added a 24-yarder in the third for the Hilltoppers. He missed a first-quarter kick from 34 yards and a 37-yard try in the third quarter. Both attempts hit the uprights and bounced away.
Jon Frazier rushed for 119 yards on 30 carries, and Maurice Bradley added 67 yards on 14 carries for the Hilltoppers.
Indiana State 21, N. Iowa 19
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Jake Shields rushed for 136 yards and scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Indiana State came from behind to beat Northern Iowa.
The Sycamores (4-6, 2-3 Gateway Conference) trailed 17-7 heading into the final quarter before Shields scored on a 7-yard run with 10:33 remaining to cap a 41-yard scoring drive. He added a 3-yard touchdown run five minutes later on a 67-yard drive to give Indiana State a 21-17 lead.
The Panthers (4-5, 1-4) closed out scoring when Indiana State gave up an intentional safety as time ran out.
Northern Iowa went 80 yards on its opening possession on Jason Breeland's 27-yard run for the only touchdown of the first half. Mackenzie Hoambrecker's 38-yard field goal in the second quarter gave the Panthers a 10-0 halftime lead.
Western Illinois 28, SW Missouri St. 23
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Kick returner Reggie Gray piled up 218 yards and one touchdown to lead Western Illinois to a win over Southwest Missouri State.
Besides his 70-yard punt return for a touchdown, Gray also returned a kickoff 95 yards, setting up a Western Illinois field goal that put the Leathernecks up 11-9. Both returns came in the third quarter. Western Illinois (8-1, 5-1 Gateway Conference) held Southwest Missouri to 41 yards of total offense through three quarters, including 7 yards rushing, to take a 21-9 lead into the last quarter.
