Cocaine trafficking case
AUSTINTOWN -- A Black Oak Lane man wanted on two charges of trafficking in cocaine was arrested Thursday afternoon during a traffic stop on South Raccoon Road. A loaded handgun was found on the floor of the car he was driving. Police pulled the man over about 1:30 p.m. after checking his license plate and learning he had been secretly indicted on trafficking charges in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The charges were for less than 5 grams of cocaine.
The handgun was found wrapped in a sock on the car's floor near the passenger seat. Police also found a bag of suspected marijuana in the car. Police are considering charging the man with possession of the gun and the marijuana.
A 17-year-old boy of Tyrell Street, Youngstown, who was sitting in the car's passenger seat, was taken to the Austintown police station and later released to his aunt. He was not charged.
Theft at care center
BOARDMAN -- A 43-year-old invalid patient at a South Avenue care center was robbed of $2,200, township police reports show. The sister of the patient at Boardman Community Care Center told police Thursday the money was missing from the man's bank account and that three personal checks were missing from the dresser in his room at the center.
DUI, suspension charges
COITSVILLE -- Robert L. Kinsman II, 28, of Chestnut Ridge Road, Hubbard, has been charged with DUI, a felony because it is his fourth in six years, and driving under suspension, his third in six years. Patrolman Rick Jamrozik first saw Kinsman's feet hanging out of the bed of a truck parked at Palace in the Pines on McCartney Road at 3:30 a.m. today. Jamrozik, noting Kinsman's driving record and smelling alcohol, contacted the man's girlfriend to pick him up. Jamrozik ordered Kinsman to wait for his ride, then left.
Later, Jamrozik saw Kinsman driving erratically and stopped him on state Route 616. The officer said Kinsman failed field sobriety tests and refused to have his blood-alcohol content tested. Kinsman also faces charges of failure to comply with a police order, failure to control and failure to wear a seat belt. Kinsman was to be arraigned today in Campbell Municipal Court.
Patient abuse alleged
BOARDMAN -- A 27-year-old man faces a charge of patient abuse after township police arrested him on accusations that he slapped a patient at the Gateways to Better Living facility on Sunset Boulevard.
Another employee reported seeing Edmond Brian Brown, of Auburndale Avenue in Youngstown, strike a 57-year-old female around 8:45 p.m. Monday, police reports show. The alleged abuse was reported to management, then to police.
Brown was released after posting a $4,000, 10 percent bond after a Thursday appearance in county court in Boardman. He faces a July 1 pretrial.
Police said the woman suffered no visible injuries.
Radio disruption
BOARDMAN -- Township police communications were disrupted for about 30 to 40 minutes Thursday night when an unauthorized user interrupted the police radio system and made false reports.
Lt. Jerre Patterson said police are investigating to determine who made the interruptions that came around 11:40 p.m. and forced the department to switch to another frequency.
Patterson said police wondered if the transmissions may have come from an officer in another department who needed help before determining that the transmissions were false.
The male voice said things such as, "Are you stoned?" and made references to police crime-code numbers, an armed robbery and a foot pursuit. At one point, the voice complained that he had dropped his radio and may have broken it.
